JOB OPENING: ASSISTANT PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Assistant Public Works Director helps lead the City’s public works operations. The primary responsibilities are to oversee streets, drainage, and mowing employees, ensuring work is done safely, on time, and to city standards. In the absence of the Public Works Director, the Sanitation Supervisor reports directly to the Assistant Public Works Director.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES:
Supervise and schedule streets, drainage, and mowing crews.
Inspect streets, ditches, and public areas; identify and prioritize maintenance needs.
Oversee daily tasks such as pothole patching, right-of-way mowing, ditch cleaning, and debris removal.
Ensure safe work practices and proper use of equipment.
Respond to citizen requests and complaints related to streets, drainage, and mowing.
Coordinate with other city staff and assist during storms and other emergencies.
In the Director’s absence, serve as the point of contact for sanitation and receive reports from the Sanitation Supervisor.
Serve as Acting Public Works Director when assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED.
Several years of experience in street, drainage, mowing/grounds, construction, or similar work.
At least one year of experience supervising or leading field crews.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather and perform field inspections.
Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in a city or county public works or street department.
Experience with equipment such as dump trucks, mowers, tractors, or skid steers.
Familiarity with basic drainage and right-of-way maintenance practices.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Public Works Director provides overall leadership and direction for the City of Marion Public Works Department. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, and overseeing public works operations - including streets, drainage, mowing/grounds, and other assigned services. The Director sets priorities, manages resources, works closely with city leadership, and ensures high-quality, safe, and responsive service to residents. The Director supervises the Assistant Public Works Director and other staff and represents the department to the public and outside agencies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Plan, direct, and evaluate all activities of the Public Works Department, including streets, drainage, mowing/grounds, and other assigned functions.
Develop short- and long-term goals, work plans, and service levels for public works operations in coordination with the Mayor/City Administrator and other city leaders.
Provide leadership and guidance to supervisory staff, including the Assistant Public Works Director and crew leaders; ensure effective communication and coordination across crews.
Establish and enforce department policies, procedures, and safety standards to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operations.
Prioritize and approve major maintenance projects, repairs, and improvements for streets, drainage systems, and public rights-of-way.
Oversee response to major weather events, flooding, and other emergencies affecting city infrastructure; coordinate staffing, equipment, and communication.
Work with city administration on budgeting, purchasing, and contracting for public works equipment, materials, and services (set priorities and provide input; detailed day-to-day tracking can be delegated to staff).
Review reports, inspections, and recommendations from the Assistant Public Works Director and other staff; make decisions on project sequencing, resource allocation, and problem resolution.
Respond to complex or escalated citizen concerns related to public works services; communicate clearly with residents, businesses, and other stakeholders.
Represent the department at City Council meetings and other public meetings as requested; provide information and recommendations on public works issues.
Coordinate with other city departments, utilities, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure work is aligned and compliant with applicable requirements.
Mentor and develop staff, including the Assistant Public Works Director, to build strong leadership and continuity within the department.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED.
Significant experience (7+ years) in public works, street/utility maintenance, construction, or a closely related field, including several years in a supervisory or management role.
Broad knowledge of street maintenance, drainage systems, right-of-way maintenance, and related public works operations.
Demonstrated ability to lead and manage multiple crews and projects at the same time.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with city leadership, staff, citizens, and contractors.
Ability to interpret and apply city policies, safety regulations, and relevant standards to daily operations.
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience as a Public Works Director, Assistant Director, Superintendent, or similar leadership role in a city or county government.
Familiarity with municipal budgeting, purchasing, and contracting processes.
Experience with basic computer software and, ideally, work order/asset management systems.
JOB OPENING--DISTRICT COURT CLERK

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
A court clerk provides administrative and clerical support to the City of Marion’s District Court and ensures that all logistical details of a trial run smoothly. A court clerk requires strong organizational abilities, detailed knowledge of court proceedings, and strong communication skills. A court clerk creates and processes court orders and other paperwork, maintains records of court proceedings, takes notes during trials, and provides details and instructions to jury members.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The functions listed below represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Accept payments of fines and other monies on behalf of the court as directed.
Process paperwork related to court trials.
Notify individuals of court dates and required appearances.
Manage courtroom schedule.
Answer questions about trials or court documents.
Retrieve old court documents from storage or database as necessary.
Schedule hearings and court appointments.
Transcribe documents for judges and lawyers as needed.
Type and edit confidential documents and correspondence on behalf of judges and/or lawyers.
Enter necessary information into the court database.
Answer phones, send faxes, respond to emails, and perform other clerical duties as needed.
Order supplies for the court office.
Perform additional related duties as required.
